FAW celebrates Gŵyl Dewi as Gŵyl Cymru Festival returns

The Football Association of Wales is pleased to announce a celebration of culture, football and Cymru to mark St. David’s Day – Gŵyl Dewi 2026.

With funding from Welsh Government St David’s Day 2026 support fund, FAW is partnering with six football clubs and arts venues around Wales to ensure our national day becomes a long weekend of gigs, talks and community events – a celebration of the best of Cymru.

Following on from the successful Gŵyl Cymru Festival activities of the last few years, the FAW cis excited to extend this to Gŵyl Dewi over the week of 26 February to 3 March 2026.

Penrhyncoch FC will follow their JD Cymru North clash against top-of-the-table Llandudno with an evening of cawl and music in the famous Tafarn y Roosters, led by Aeron Pughe and his band’s unique blend of bluegrass and country inspired by his west Wales roots – a genre described as Ameri-Cymreig.

Ciwb, whose fresh covers of 1980s classics recently took the Welsh charts by storm, will team up with the brilliant Magi for a gig at Ruthin Town Hall, and there are more big announcements to follow soon in Ruthin.

Pontypridd’s historic Clwb y Bont will play host to a weekend of Gŵyl Dewi celebrations, first welcoming a true legend of Cymru football, Neville Southall, for a Q&A on his extraordinary career and how he sees the game, which always promises to deliver great stories and strong opinions, followed by an evening of Welsh folk music with the award-winning Gwilym Bowen Rhys and the inventive harmonies of mid-Wales duo Elin & Carys. Huw Williams performs the following night.

There will be football-themed music sessions for Welsh learners and more confident Welsh speakers in Pontypridd, as well as at Theatr Soar in Merthyr Tydfil. Theatr Soar also plays host to a special concert showcasing the awesome sounds of the young trad ensemble AVANC, along with spectacular Indian dance from Wales Tamil Sangam Cymru.

Canopi in Cardiff will bring the long weekend to a close with Riso poster and football kit upcycling workshops, and finally a watch party of the Cymru women’s team’s crucial opening World Cup qualifier versus Czechia, hosted by ALT WALES and presenter, influencer and campaigner Jess Davies.

Noel Mooney, Football Association of Wales CEO, said: “We at the FA of Wales strongly believe in celebrating and championing what’s best about our communities, and football and culture will always be at the heart of that. This is why we’ve made a strong commitment to support Gŵyl Dewi in a way that showcases our nation’s talent, pride and diversity – a Cymru that is genuinely for everyone.

“I would like to give my sincere thanks to our partners at Welsh Government who have supported our Gŵyl Dewi activities through their first ever St David’s Day fund and we feel proud to be a key part of the wider celebrations that this fund will support.”
