The FAW has pledged £50,000 in grant funding to support the development of girls’ football clubs. The Amser Ni fund is part of its commitment to building a lasting legacy from Cymru’s participation in UEFA Women’s EURO 2025.
The FAW is aiming to double female participation in football by 2026, with current figures showing a record high of over 19,300 women and girls actively involved in the sport across Wales. As outlined in its Grassroots Strategy, the FAW has also set an ambitious target to increase participation among girls aged 5 to11 by 50% by 2030.
To help achieve this, the FAW has launched Amser Ni, enabling grassroots clubs to apply for vital financial support. The fund will help clubs establish new girls’ teams at the Under 6, Under 7, Under 8, and Under 9 age groups for the 2025/26 season.
Bethan Woolley, FAW Women & Girls Strategy Lead, said: “More women and girls want to play football in Wales than ever before. We’ve worked hard to make sure our nation is ready to meet this growing demand. The Amser Ni fund is essential — it helps clubs overcome common financial barriers to creating new teams.
“Alongside initiatives like the CFF Environments FOR HER fund, Women’s Coaching and Refereeing Workshops, Gem FOR HER, Gem FOR YOU, and Chwarae FOR HER, Amser Ni strengthens our commitment to creating inclusive, supportive environments where girls and women feel they truly belong.”
Ben Field, FAW Head of Grassroots, added: “The FAW is fully committed to growing the game for girls aged 5 to 11. This fund is a key part of that mission, giving clubs across Wales the resources they need to welcome more girls into football and foster a sense of belonging in our football community.”
With strong strategic investment and a clear vision, the FAW is helping to shape a future where every girl in Wales has the opportunity to play, grow, and thrive through football.
Clubs across Wales are invited to apply for £500 per new team at the above ages for the 25/26 season. Clubs are permitted to apply for funding for up to two new teams (£1,000). The deadline for applications is 5pm on Monday 21st July 2025.
