Cymru’s historic EURO 2025 debut with Elise Hughes and Lois Joel

Elise Hughes and Lois Joel are the latest guests on The Cwtsh, connected by EE, where they reflect on Cymru’s historic debut at UEFA Women’s EURO 2025.

The duo open up about the incredible support from Y Wal Goch, the emotions of the opening group-stage match against the Netherlands, and the pride of representing their country — in front of their families and a global audience.

Despite a defeat in the opening game, both players highlight the significance of the occasion beyond the result. They speak about the unity and togetherness within the squad, the importance of quickly regrouping before their next challenge against France, and how the team has leaned into the moment while staying focused on their goals.

Joel and Hughes share their memories of the build-up: the sound of the crowd from inside the hotel, the sea of red flooding the streets, and the energy that hit as they boarded the team bus.

Both reflect on the surreal experience of seeing their loved ones in the stands, and receiving photos and videos from fan zones back home.

A major talking point was the joint support from Cymru and Netherlands fans, who together created the biggest fan walk in a Women’s EURO tournament history — over 8,000 strong.

“The anthem is always special, no matter where we’re playing — but this one just hit more,” Hughes explained.

“I’ve been to major tournaments as a fan when the men were playing, and obviously that was unbelievable. But this time, to be involved as a player, I’ve never felt anything like it.

“We actually spoke in our team meeting before the game and said, ‘When the anthem comes, take it all in — enjoy it. Embrace it.’”

The episode closes with Hughes and Joel discussing the mood in camp as they prepare for their next game against France.

Their final message is to Y Wal Goch, thanking them for their unwavering support — both at home and in Lucerne.
