Fishlock breaks record as Cymru top group

Cymru 2-0 Kosovo

  • Fishlock becomes Cymru’s all-time top scorer
  • Mary McAteer nets her first goal
  • Cymru gain promotion to League A of UEFA Nations League
  • Cymru move into European Qualifiers Play-Off

Jess Fishlock became the record goalscorer, Mary McAteer scored her first ever goal, Cymru topped their qualifying group and gained promotion back to League A of the UEFA Nations League. It was a good day at the office for Rhian Wilkinson in her first campaign as Cymru manager.

Cymru will now await the outcome of the Play-Off draw for UEFA EURO 2025 as topping League B group earns them the opportunity towards qualifying for their first ever major tournament.

This was a completely dominant performance for Cymru, who enjoyed the majority of possession and chances in this match.

Goals in this game were inevitable and Fishlock seemed destined to score and did just that in the 8th minute and when the ball crossed the white paint between the posts, it confirmed her as Cymru’s all-time top goalscorer.

Her 45th Cymru goal put her above Ian Rush (28), Gareth Bale (41) and Helen Ward (44) in that incredible list of talent.

Whilst Fishlock has a career full of goals and experience, Mary McAteer’s career is on the rise and the striker netted her first goal for Cymru with an assist from the record breaker during the first half.

There are tougher games ahead for Cymru in the Play-Offs and they will learn their fate on Friday (19 July) when the draw takes place in Nyon.

European Qualifiers Play-Offs

The Play-Off draw will take place at 12:00 BST on Friday, 19 July in Nyon and it will determine the ties for two rounds of two-legged contests, as 28 teams compete for the last seven finals slots at UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 in Switzerland, playing two rounds of home-and-away ties.

The first round of matches will take place between 23 and 29 October. The second round of games will be played between 27 November and 3 December.
