Cymru manager Gemma Grainger has paid tribute to Helen Ward after the forward called time on her international career.
During the course of her 15-year international career, Helen has become Cymru’s record goal scorer with 44 goals in 105 appearances, becoming a fan favourite with the Red Wall.
“Since I’ve been in my position as manager Helen has been a key part of the team’s development in terms of her leadership skills both on and off the pitch. Helen’s career speaks for itself in terms of the successes and dedication she’s had over both internationally and domestically.
With regards to her family and being a mum, the commitment she’s had to coming back and playing at the level that Helen has allowed her to play for as long as she’s wanted to. She’s seen the women’s game move from amateur into a professional era and Helen will continue to play a big part as that journey continues as an ambassador for the women’s game, where she can have a huge impact.
Helen is a brilliant role model to the younger players coming through the National Team setup right now. The type of forward she is, the timing of her movement and one touch finishing is some of the highest in the game and she’s been superb in passing that knowledge on to other players who look to emulate her achievements in a Cymru shirt.”
