Historic Achievements for Welsh Officials

Today, Friday 12 July, a quartet of Welsh women will officiate a UEFA match for the first time.

The UEFA Women’s EURO Qualifying match between Iceland and Germany will see Cheryl Foster as Referee, Ceri Williams as Assistant Referee, Michelle Portelli as Assistant Referee and Charlotte Carpenter as Fourth Official.

This historic achievement is just one of the advancements the FAW has witnessed Welsh officials attain in the past years. At the recent Adran Leagues Referee Academy Summer Conference Grassroots Referee Saffron Rennsion led a panel which featured former Cymru International Helen Ward, former Cymru International and current FIFA Referee Cheryl Foster, and FIFA Assistant Referee Ceri Williams.

The panellists reflected on their careers in football and offered insight for those interested in developing theirs. You can watch the panel in full now on RedWall+.

On her refereeing journey so far, Ceri Williams said: “If it’s not challenging you it’s not developing you. I don’t think fourteen year old me would have ever thought I would be sat here doing what I do now. I think she would probably be in awe of everything we have achieved in the last few years.”
