Inspiring the next generation: Reflections on the FAW Youth Conferences 2025

This year, the Football Association of Wales delivered the FAW Youth Conference across the country, with two inspiring events at Colliers Park in Wrexham and Dragon Park in Newport.

Across both days, one message was clear: young people aren’t just the leaders of tomorrow, they are already shaping the game today.

Organised and delivered in collaboration with the FAW’s Youth Council, the FAW Youth Conference provided an opportunity for attendees to expand their leadership potential in football by developing their skills and knowledge through a range of workshops, activities, and talks.

One of the most talked-about sessions was the Hidden Roles in Football workshop, which helped delegates discover just how many opportunities exist beyond the pitch. From coaching to HR, refereeing to grassroots development, the sessions opened doors to careers that many had never considered before. Practical advice on CVs and applications gave attendees tools they can take into their next steps in football.

The Youth Leadership & Sustainability workshop brought big ideas to life. Working in teams, participants designed their own “future-proof” football clubs, considering how to reduce climate impact while keeping the game thriving for the next generation. It was a lively, creative session that proved football can be both a passion and a force for positive change.

Hearing directly from young people was a highlight of both conferences. The Leading the Game panel discussions gave space for honest conversations about the challenges and opportunities facing youth leaders. With voices from the FAW National Youth Council alongside Cymru legends like Robert Earnshaw and Kevin Ratcliffe, the discussions were full of passion, insight, and hope for the future.

The conferences ended with a mix of practical tasters. From on-pitch coaching and officiating to event management activities, delegates were encouraged to try out every aspect of the game. A special buzz came from the Esports Wales sessions, where first-time gamers teamed up with experienced players to explore Rocket League and EAFC. For many, it was an introduction to another fast-growing part of football culture.

Perhaps the most valuable part of the day wasn’t on the agenda at all it was the chance to connect. Over lunch breaks and in-between workshops, young people built friendships, swapped ideas, and spoke with FAW staff and partners about opportunities to get involved in football.

As we reflect on the conferences in Wrexham and Newport, one thing is certain: the future of Welsh football is in safe hands. The creativity, confidence, and commitment shown by the young people who joined us were nothing short of inspiring.

At PAWB, we believe football truly is for everyone. These conferences reminded us that when we give young people the space to lead, share their ideas, and shape the game, the whole of Welsh football is stronger for it.

Here’s to building on this momentum, and to seeing these young voices continue to transform our game.
