James Chester retires from professional football

Former Cymru defender James Chester has announced his decision to retire from playing professional football.

The 36-year old made 35 senior appearances for Cymru and played every minute of all six games as Chris Coleman’s side made history by reaching the semi-finals of EURO 2016. Chester made his Cymru debut in a 2-0 friendly defeat to the Netherlands in June 2014 and played his final international match in a 2-1 loss to Denmark in the UEFA Nations League in November 2018.

“The summer we had in 2016 was by far and away the best time in my career,” said Chester in an interview with The Athletic last year. “I don’t think any of us imagined getting as far as we did. There were some incredible moments, both on the pitch and during the time we spent together away from the pitch. It was an incredible six to eight weeks — not just for us but also our families. We’ll always have that to look back on.”

Born in Warrington and eligible for Cymru through his mother, Chester began his club career at Manchester United after coming through the youth ranks at the club and made one League Cup appearance. However, he would make over a century of appearances for Hull City and Aston Villa, while also representing West Bromwich Albion, Stoke City, Derby County and Barrow.

In 2014, Chester was part of the Hull City side that reached the FA Cup Final against Arsenal and he would score the opening goal inside four minutes. However, Arsenal would win the match 3-2 with his Cymru team-mate Aaron Ramsey scoring the winning goal in extra-time. Chester ends his career with Salford City having joined the club last summer.

In a statement, Chester said: “After 18 years as a professional footballer and over 500 games, the time has come for me to announce my retirement. It’s been an incredible journey, filled with unforgettable moments, amazing teammates, fantastic staff, and unwavering support at every club I’ve played for.

“I’m incredibly proud of everything I’ve achieved in the game, and now I’m excited to see what next my life brings next. I’ll remain part of the Salford City squad until the end of the season, where I’ll continue learning about the other aspects of football.

“Thank you all for everything.”
