Luis Gardner made a special return to his former high school, Ysgol Dinas Brân, this week ahead of representing Cymru at the UEFA Under-19 EURO finals on home soil.
The visit offered a chance for pupils to meet one of their former students and hear first-hand about the journey from the classroom to international football.
For the Everton defender, it was a special opportunity to revisit the place where his football ambitions first began to take shape.
“It felt great to be back and to see so many familiar faces. I spent most of my teenage years here, so it’s really special to be back,” said Gardner.
The visit comes just days before Cymru kick off their UEFA Under-19 EURO campaign against nine-time winners Spain, with Gardner among the squad hoping to make an impact on the European stage.
Speaking to pupils during the visit, Gardner reflected on the importance of hard work and perseverance in reaching the international level.
“Coming back today brought so many memories back,” he admitted. “Doing my GCSEs, playing football with my friends and much more. They were all good memories with great people.
“It’s nice to come back and share the experiences that I had in school, but also in my career to date. Hopefully, it inspires them to chase their dreams and believe that everything is possible.”

The school has a proud sporting history and has previously produced Cymru international Harry Wilson, whose rise to the senior national team has served as an inspiration for many young Welsh footballers.
While Gardner is now forging his own path, he hopes his return can encourage the next generation to believe in their ambitions.
“It’s not bad company to be in,” he added. “To see what Harry has gone on to achieve over the years is amazing, with the things he’s achieved at Fulham and with Wales. That’s where I want to get to.
“Harry’s journey was mentioned a lot during my years coming through school, especially by the PE department. I’m making my own path now and I’m looking forward to what’s to come, starting with the EUROs this summer.”
Neil Garvey, Head of PE at Ysgol Dinas Brân, added: “It was amazing to welcome ex-pupil Luis and the FAW back into school for an inspiring Q&A.
“Our pupils gained a real insight into what it takes to become a professional footballer. Luis truly embodies our school motto – ‘Success through effort.'”
