Ramsey and Brooks on target for vital qualifying win

Latvia 0-2 Cymru

  • Ramsey opens scoring from the penalty spot
  • Brooks comes off the bench to net
  • Clean sheet for the Cymru defence
  • Cymru level on points with Armenia

Rob Page took his Cymru team to Riga knowing that three points was a necessity to keep alive hopes of qualification for UEFA EURO 2024.

Cymru dominated the stats but could not turn their possession and chances into goals in open play until the last minute of added time.

Aaron Ramsey’s penalty in the opening half offered hope that the victory would be a lot more comfortable, but Latvia continued to push for an equaliser until the end in what became a physical contest.

Substitute David Brooks sealed the game with a fine finish in injury-time, while a clean-sheet at the other end will be another positive to take as Cymru complete the double over Latvia.

The win takes Cymru to 7 points in Group D, level with Armenia in third place and three points behind Türkiye in second.

The next qualifier for Cymru is against Croatia in Cardiff on 15 October, following an international challenge match against Gibraltar in Wrexham on 11 October.
