Rhian Wilkinson reflects on Cymru’s historic EURO qualification while climbing Yr Wyddfa

As Cymru head coach Rhian Wilkinson climbed the slopes of Yr Wyddfa, preparing to announce her WEURO 2025 squad, she frequently paused – not only to take in the breathtaking landscape but to reflect on a historic journey that has already transformed Welsh football.

Since taking charge in February 2024, Wilkinson has led Cymru on an extraordinary journey, guiding the team to its first-ever qualification for a major international tournament.

Now, she’s set to name the 23 players who will represent Cymru in Switzerland this summer, doing so from the highest point in Wales.

The choice of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) as the announcement site carries deep personal and symbolic significance.

For Wilkinson, it’s more than just a stunning backdrop; it represents the arduous climb her team has undertaken.

“I’ve been up this mountain five times since I took the job,” Wilkinson said, pausing to reflect on Cymru’s long road to the Euros. “We talked a lot about ‘the mountain’ – the metaphor of climbing, adjusting to altitude, reaching new heights.

“That journey had base camps, setbacks, and lessons, but each stage was critical. It’s symbolic—about rising together.”

Wilkinson’s connection to Wales runs deep. “Wales has always been a home to me,” she added. “My father did a lot of leadership training at Plas y Brenin, and my parents even honeymooned on Snowdon. So, coming here, standing on this mountain, always makes me feel close to them.”

The path to EURO 2025 was anything but smooth. Cymru battled through a demanding qualifying campaign, notching key wins against Croatia and Kosovo, before sealing qualification in a dramatic two-legged play-off against the Republic of Ireland.

Throughout it all, Wilkinson’s squad had to embrace a new identity – favourites, not underdogs.

“Wales is usually seen as the underdog against top-tier sides. But in League B, the expectation was on us,” she explained. “That was a good pressure – we had to take control, play purposeful football, and own the moment.”

That mindset was tested to the limit against Ireland – a breathtaking two-legged play-off final which would determined which nation would make it to this summer’s finals. “The play-off against Ireland was enormous. They’re a great team – experienced at major tournaments. But we were focused. Lily’s goal at home put us in a great position. In the away leg, I felt calm. It was intense, but I trusted the team.

“When Ireland scored late, yes it was stressful, but I believed we’d hold. Seeing the final whistle, the players, the staff – it was unforgettable. I joined at the sprint end of their marathon, and I’ll never forget that elation.”

Now, Cymru face a formidable group stage challenge at the Euros, drawn alongside France, the Netherlands, and England. Yet Wilkinson is full of belief – not just in her squad’s ability, but in the significance of this moment for Welsh football.

“I feel pride. I think of young girls like I was, watching their brothers play, not having the same chances. That’s changing now,” she continued. “This team is changing football in Wales. No one outside expects much of us at the Euros—but inside? We believe. No fear. Just ambition and unity.”

A huge part of Cymru’s qualification journey has been the magnificent support from the Red Wall across Wales.

And Wilkinson was also quick to honour the passionate Cymru supporters who’ve helped carry the team this far.

“To the fans – thank you. Some have followed us everywhere. We hear you. We feel you,” she finished.

“We are Wales, and we are ready. I can see it now – 5 July, Lucerne. The anthem. The red wall. The moment. It’s not pressure – it’s opportunity. And I can’t wait.

“History like this only comes around once, and I want everyone to be able to feel it and enjoy it.”

The squad announcement, taking place on Thursday, 19 June atop Yr Wyddfa, will be the heart of a nationwide day of celebration. In nearby Talysarn, a community football festival and evening Q&A with live music will honour the team’s historic achievement and bring fans and families together.

For Cymru, this moment is about more than football. It’s about pride, resilience, and a team that has climbed its own mountain – and is ready to take on Europe.
