Rod Thomas 1947-2025

The Football Association of Wales is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Cymru international Rod Thomas, who has died at the age of 78.

Born in Glyncorrwg in 1947, Thomas enjoyed a distinguished playing career for both club and country and earned a respected place in the history of Welsh football. A reliable and composed defender, he represented Cymru with pride throughout a decade of international football.

Thomas made his senior international debut in 1967 and went on to win 50 caps for Cymru, becoming one of the nation’s most-capped players of his generation. Renowned for his consistency and defensive awareness, he was a trusted figure in the Cymru backline during an era of strong competition and transition for the national team. Although he did not score for Cymru, his influence was felt through his leadership, dependability and professionalism on and off the pitch.

At club level, Thomas began his senior career with Gloucester City before moving to Swindon Town in 1964. He made more than 350 appearances for the Robins and was part of the iconic side that defeated Arsenal in the 1969 League Cup final. His excellent performances for Swindon earned him regular international recognition and made him the club’s most-capped player while at the County Ground.

In 1973 he joined Derby County and contributed to one of the greatest periods in the club’s history. He was part of Derby’s First Division title-winning squad in 1974/75, making 22 league appearances during that campaign. Thomas also featured in the Charity Shield victory over West Ham United in 1975 and represented Derby in European competition, including the memorable 4-1 victory over Real Madrid at the Baseball Ground. He made a total of 118 appearances for the Rams before signing for Cardiff City in 1977.

Thomas won his final Cymru cap later that same year, bringing an end to a decade of loyal international service.
