Trefor Lloyd Hughes MBE

The Football Association of Wales is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Trefor Lloyd Hughes MBE, former President of the FAW and a lifelong servant to football in Wales.

A proud Anglesey man, Trefor devoted more than four decades to developing and supporting the game across the country, earning widespread respect for his integrity, dedication and unwavering commitment to Welsh football.

Born in 1947, Trefor’s passion for the game began at grassroots level on Ynys Môn, where he played, volunteered and later served as secretary of the Anglesey League, the Welsh Alliance and the North Wales Coast Football Association. His experience and leadership made him a key figure in North Wales football, and in 1989 he was elected to the FAW Council.

Over the years, Trefor held several senior roles within the FAW, including Treasurer and Senior Vice-President, before being elected President in August 2012. His presidency was marked by a calm, personable style and a strong belief in the power of football to bring communities together. He remained a passionate advocate for improving local football structures and championed the needs of clubs and volunteers at every level of the game.

Alongside his significant football commitments, Trefor was also a dedicated public servant. He was a long-standing councillor for the Isle of Anglesey County Council, represented the Ynys Gybi ward, and served as Mayor of Holyhead. His life in public service reflected his deep-rooted belief in community, responsibility and the importance of giving back.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution to Welsh football, particularly on Anglesey, Trefor was awarded the MBE, an honour that reflected both his impact on the sport and the high regard in which he was held across Wales. Trefor was also made a Gorsedd of the Bards in 2007.

Trefor will be remembered for his warmth, humility and unwavering love for the game. His influence on Welsh football is lasting, from grassroots leagues to the national stage, and he leaves behind a legacy built on service and a lifelong dedication to the communities he cared so deeply about.

The thoughts of everyone at the Football Association of Wales are with Trefor’s family, friends and all who knew him during this difficult time.
