The Football Association of Wales held an event led by the Girls Regional Programme on Saturday 16 May at Newtown FC, which saw selected players representing the National Academi (Girls) North and South teams competing against each other.
The fixture helped conclude a positive first season for the National Academi (Girls) programme, with all 11 clubs represented across the matchday squads. With the competitive game providing players with an enjoyable and challenging experience to support their ongoing development.
The day also included Girls Regional Programme North v South fixtures at U14 and U16 level, capping off a successful season for Regional Programme players, who throughout the year have competed against National Academi (Boys) clubs and Professional Game Academy teams in England.
Staff from across the Girls Regional Programme worked collaboratively to host the event, whilst National Team coaches were also in attendance to monitor and track talented female players within the Welsh player pathway.
Speaking about the event, Tom Peevor, National Academi (Girls) Manager, said: “It was a great occasion to celebrate the first season of the National Academi (Girls) programme after clubs have worked extremely hard to implement the National Academi standards and provide the best possible development environments for players.
“The level on show across the day was highly competitive and demonstrated the talent that exists right across Wales. I would like to thank all National Academi clubs, staff and parents for their continued support of women and girls’ football in Wales.
“It has also been really positive to see different areas of the player development pathway collaborating throughout the season to provide great experiences for players, including the support shown by National Academi (Boys) clubs through fixtures against Girls Regional Programme teams.”
