Cymru 0-7 Spain
- UEFA Under-19 European Championship 2026
- 28 March 2026
- The Racecourse Ground, Wrexham
Cymru’s UEFA European Under-19 Championship campaign began with defeat as nine-times champions Spain claimed a 7-0 victory in the tournament’s opening match at The Racecourse Ground in Wrexham.
On a landmark evening for Welsh football, Chris Gunter’s side became the first Cymru Under-19 men’s team to compete at a UEFA EURO finals on home soil, but they came up against a Spain side that demonstrated the quality which has made them one of Europe’s leading youth nations.
Cymru defended resolutely during the opening stages and almost created an opportunity of their own through Henry Kasvosve before Spain broke the deadlock on 16 minutes. Daniel Yañez cut inside from the right and his deflected effort looped over goalkeeper Luis Lines.
Spain quickly built on that advantage as Xavi Espart fired home before Morante struck twice in the space of eight first-half minutes to send the visitors into the interval with a commanding 4-0 lead.
The holders continued to impress after the restart, with captain Quim Junyent producing an outstanding chipped finish just a minute into the second half to extend their advantage.
Spain added further goals through substitute Sergio Esteban before Diego Aguado’s free-kick, which took a deflection on its way into the net, completed the scoring.
Cymru now turn their attention to Wednesday’s match with Germany, looking to produce a positive response in their second Group A fixture before concluding the group stage against Denmark.
