Cymru have the statistical advantage over Iceland heading into the UEFA Nations League B4 match on Friday (11 October) having won five of the previous seven meetings between the two teams.
The first match took place over 40-years ago in June 1980 when goals from David Giles, Brian Flynn and a brace from Ian Walsh earned Mike England’s side a comfortable 4-0 FIFA World Cup qualifying win in Reykjavík. However, Cymru were held to a 2-2 draw in the return match in Swansea in October 1981. This game is remembered for a floodlight failure at the Vetch Field and the lights also went out on Cymru’s qualification hopes as the draw prevented their progress.
Iceland’s only victory over Cymru took place in September 1984 as Magnus Bergs scored the only goal of the game for the home side, but Cymru have won the last four meetings, the most-recent in March 2014 in a friendly at the Cardiff City Stadium.
The match is best remembered for Gareth Bale scoring a superb individual goal to complete the 3-1 victory.
The former Cymru star picked-up the ball in his own half, cruised past his opposite number on the touchline – taking himself off the field of play in the process – before cutting inside to finish into the far corner.
