Our Tîm. Our Time. C'mon Cymru

Rhian Wilkinson visits Ponthir Phoenixes ahead of EURO play-off

With seven weeks to go until Cymru’s first ever UEFA EURO 2025 play-off semi-final against Slovakia at the Cardiff City Stadium, clubs across Wales are coming together to show their support for the team. Manager Rhian Wilkinson visited Ponthir Phoenixes who have purchased over 60 tickets to the game.

Wilkinson visited the club based in Newport to deliver a coaching session for the club’s u14s girls as a thank you for supporting Cymru. Ponthir Phoenixes has girls teams from U8s to U16s, and first attended a game at the FIFA World Cup play-off semi-final against Bosnia & Herzegovina in 2022. The club did not want to miss another opportunity to see the team make history when they play Slovakia on Tuesday 29 October.

Following the visit, the club’s Head Coach Richard Johnson said “We went to the last play-off for the World Cup in 2022 and we had a great time. When we realised that Cymru was going to be in another play-off we thought it would be a great idea to do the same again.”

“Having Rhian run a training session was a fantastic and memorable experience for the girls and our club. We’ll be there to cheer on the team against Slovakia in October. C’mon Cymru!”

On the brink of Cymru reaching their first ever major tournament, the FAW are looking to break the attendance record of a Women’s National Team game set at 15,200 following the World Cup play-off at the Cardiff City Stadium in October 2022. Group bookings from clubs and schools are expected to play a big part in reaching that milestone, which offer a discounted rate on tickets and are open for schools, clubs and any individual looking to purchase 10 or more tickets.

Speaking about the visit, Rhian Wilkinson said; “The support of local clubs and schools means the world to us, to have over 60 fans coming from just this club Ponthir Phoenix to support our team is massive.”

“This will be my first game at Cardiff City Stadium so I am very excited, I’d love to put an appeal out to all the clubs, local schools and the people within the community to come out and support these women.”

“We want to get a massive crowd out to watch and break the record again. This is a team full of once in a generation type players.”
