Wales on the World Stage

From Welsh music artist to national treasure, to global star. In this series Dafydd Iwan talks about how the Welsh language classic, Yma O Hyd, became the anthem for Cymru at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The ‘Yma O Hyd’ music video by Dafydd Iwan x Ar Log x The Red Wall can be watched on RedWall+.

Welsh rapper Sage Todz discusses representing Wales and Welsh culture at the World Cup in Qatar with the support of Wales Arts International in the Wales on the World Stage series.

Ahead of Cymru’s FIFA World Cup Play-Off Final against Ukraine, the FAW teamed up with the Welsh drill artist to release an exclusive track ‘O HYD’. The track begins with a passionate sample of legendary folk artist Dafydd Iwan’s Yma O Hyd, before leading into Sage Todz’s exciting rap. The ‘O HYD’ music video can also be watched on RedWall+.

Meet the Urdd Choir, who like Dafydd Iwan and Sage Todz, talk about their experience representing Wales at the World Cup in Qatar in this series.

The Urdd is Wales’ main youth movement and has been established for over 100 years. The main purpose of the Urdd is to ensure that opportunities are offered to young people in Wales through the Welsh language.

Talking about the Urdd Choir in Qatar, the CEO of Urdd Gobaith Cymru, Sian Lewis said: “There is always singing happening to uplift the crowd and uplift the team. So, it was a natural part that culture merges with sport as we take Wales, the Welsh language, our country, and our values and to promote those as Team Wales.”

Gŵyl Cymru

Cymru’s cultural festivals are among the most celebrated in the world, from the Eisteddfod to Green Man to Tafwyl where lovers of music and the arts attend each year.

In 2023, the FAW and the Arts Council of Wales relaunched Gŵyl Cymru, with the aim of making football and creativity the heart of our communities and for sport and the arts to showcase what’s best about Wales at many of the biggest festivals across the country.

‘A day at the Urdd Eisteddfod’ follows Cymru managers Rob Page and Matty Jones as they visited the 2023 Urdd Eisteddfod in Llandovery where they had the opportunity to listen to Welsh band Dros Dro perform live.

Welsh electric pop musician Ani Glass, performs in her native languages Welsh and Cornish and has been a proud champion of the FAW’s work promoting Welsh language and culture to the world for years.

In ‘Ani Glass yn holi Ian Gwyn Hughes: Gŵyl Cymru at Tafwyl’ we hear how the FAW has created a positive, open and welcoming environment with the Welsh language central to that culture
